The
ArtStarts gallery is the first Canadian gallery devoted
exclusively to young people’s art. The visually
striking exhibitions celebrate the exciting artwork
that emerges when professional artists, students and
teachers work together to deepen learning, creativity
and community connections. Take
a look at our virtual gallery!
January 19 to July 23, 2010
This vibrant and thought-provoking exhibition invites
visitors to experience the world through the eyes
of young artists from Port Moody to Greenland, as
it brings together a series of projects that investigate
communities both local and global. Highlights include
vibrant portraits of contemporary Aboriginal role
models, a community-inspired comic project that celebrates
local cultural diversity, and a photo-based exploration
of Vancouver’s downtown eastside as seen by
the children who live there.
Exhibition title sponsor: Government of Canada

and Commemoration Program - Olympic Torch Relay Initiative

Three Elsie Roy classes worked with artist Elizabeth
MacKenzie to develop a portrait project that responded
to BC’s 150th anniversary as a crown colony.
This residency represents a range of responses to
the idea of a “hero” and acknowledges
BC’s heritage by representing heroes from the
students’ own lives (primary students), from
BC’s past (intermediate students) and from the
neighbourhood (senior students). This project supports
ArtStarts’ goal to develop community connections
by inviting and working with schools in our own neighbourhood.
Sponsor: The Province
of British Columbia through the BC 150 Secretariat
of the Ministry of Tourism, Sport and the Arts.
